Early 1990's... a weird time. Lots of~ ahem~ experimentation~!
Perhaps that road trip into the 4-corners region of the Southwest
inspired this odd madcap comic strip idea, or else, it was poverty
stricken trips to the cool cool public Library during a super hot
summer in Philadelphia. Somehow, I discovered an aisle that
focused exclusively on apparel... Fashions through the ages,
ancient weapons & armor, and a dozen or so photo-illustrated
tomes all about HATS and HEAD-GEAR.
The strip deals with the Tramp-like travels and musings
of an unlikely pair: Hatman, an Old Fellow with a 'Magic'
hat-box that he wears like a backpack, and Hopi, a young
Native American Boy who is clearly older & wiser than
his juvenile geriatric companion. They are often at
odds with each other, but always willing to explore
their current situation to its full potential. Neither
my writing or artistic skills were firing on all
cylinders with this effort, yet there are
sporadic moments that made MY
journey with these characters
worth it ;~j
Lysdexicuss: You are one of a kind, my friend! I love the dream sequence one (I bet everyone does). The shot of them flydreaming, with the earth far below, is beautiful, as is the panel of them poofing a hole in the clouds. Somehow the all have a southwest feel not entirely reliant upon the young Hopi - not sure how unless it is the vagabond, roaming feel; which I still associate with the southwest. -- Mykal
ReplyDeleteWOW! you belong in comics alongside Robert Crumb. These are so weird and fantasical
ReplyDeleteThese are fantastic!
ReplyDeleteEach one cracked me up, and I am very impressed (and a bit jealous, even) of the amount of thought, effort and detail in each.
I could ramble for an hour...let's see...I love the design of Hopi, especially his face and nose and hair, too, I guess. Echoing Mykal and KW, These rival some of the most creative alternative/underground comics I've ever seen. I love the scene with them in the park(?) with the benches and the pigeons/birds. And yeah, that out of body one is a classic! the panel where they punch through the clouds is priceless. Creative, funny, and talented. That's you.
These are adorable!!!!!!!!!!!!!
