A MIDSUMMER NIGHT'S DREAM~ HOT OFF THE PRESS~ ER~ PHOTOSHOP~!
When the Kids @ the School here on Ocracoke asked me
if I would illustrate the Poster for their upcoming Play~
a little ditty by Bill Shakenberger~ I hesitated at the
chance... My 1st question was: 'Arn't there any Kids
who can DRAW at your School ?' But, all them kids
was busy busy busy gearing up dis-remembering
their lines and rehearsing, so~ once full fledged
flattery set in, and my ego inflated to the size
of a pea~ I said 'Okay'~ then whipped out my
trusty ever-present Sharpie, handed it to
Molly, along with a napkin sitting by the
hordevourves (at a gallery opening)
and asked her to scribble what the
design had to entail. She quickly
scrawled: A LIVE OAK TREE,
A DONKEY-MAN (Nick Bottom),
and FAERIES~!
Always up for a challenge, no matter
what kind of bad timing is involved~
I figured I'd jam it out in two sittings,
spending maybe 8 hours max on it.
Eight sittings, 5 days, and 20+ hours
later, here is what we got...

DURING A SEVERAL DAY COMMUTE OFF ISLAND

SINCE I KNEW HOW SMALL THE FAERIES
WERE GOING TO BE, I DID NOT OBSESS
OVER MAKING THEM PERFECT~ IN FACT~
AS IS ONE OF MY BAD HABITS PICKED UP
FROM MY DREAM JOURNAL DAYS, I DREW
THEM STRAIGHT IN INK WITHOUT ANY
PENCILS~! JUST BALLPOINT PEN UNDER
A COUPLE OF THEM, WITH SHARPIE INK
ON TOP~! ONE CANNOT AFFORD TO
MESS UP USING THIS TECHNIQUE,
BUT IT REALLY SHARPENS YOUR
SKILL LEVEL AND IMPRESSES
NON-ARTISTS~!
NEXT, I SWIPED SOME IMAGES FROM
GOOGLES MASSIVE IMAGE WAREHOUSE~
OF A DONKEY~ AND A COOL MICHELANGELO
SCULPTURE ENTITLED 'CROUCHING BOY'~!
ALSO NOTE THAT, I DECIDED TO USE REAL
GOGGLES FOR PUCK'S HEADGEAR, AND
JUST PASTED A NEAT PAIR OVER MY
ORIGINAL DRAWING.

THE ADVENTURES OF EDDIE McCLICK-CLICK~!
This entire concept was an inspired extrapolation
of my college roommate's ideas while we sat around
doing bong hits listening to Country Joe & The Fish
(on vinyl of course), watching real fish and snails and
crabs interacting in our big ass aquarium (the sole
source of illumination). Eddie McClick-Click was a
stoner like Shaggy, but way dumber. His Younger
Brother Ernie McClick-SQuish (cuz he has bubble
gum on one of his peg-legs) is the smart, hyper-
active violent one. The Spaceship is a Living Organism,
the head of a Wise Ancient Chinese Prophet...
MIS-Adventures ensue~!

SACRILEGE~ SELF-CRUCIFIXION~ SELF-KNOWLEDGE~!
When we're adolescents, teenagers, or young adults~
something wonderful happens (not to all of us, but most).
We become REBELS~! We Rebel against Authority, and
those who are not sympathetic towards our very real
metamorphosis, in which we attempt to gain a little
separation from the herd (flock), and 'Get To Know
Our SELF'. During my Pre-Christian/Christian Phase,
I gobbled up all that I could about this odd, twisted,
mesmerizing religion. It is truly a LOVE/HATE
relationship, even for the most devout followers.
The most interesting stuff comes out of the 'Lost
Books' or Apocrypha of the Bible~ along with the
Dead Sea Scrolls and random other Gospels that
the Desert has coughed up from un-broken clay
jars and hidden cliff-dwelling caves. Turns out,
the un-edited History portrays Jesus more as
a Rebel Leader whose true path was Self-Knowledge
and Understanding. The idea is, if you can truly
'Know Thyself', then you will be that much closer
to knowing and understanding fellow Humans.
In the Book of Thomas, which was NOT included
in the Producer's Cut (323 Nicea), Jesus states:
'Those who Understand me shall have everlasting
life'. This is better known now as the quote: 'Ye
who shall believe in me, shall have everlasting Life'.
BIG DIFFERENCE~! One simple word change...
To BELIEVE is an act of Faith, that requires 0 intelligence...
To UNDERSTAND is an act of reflection, introspection,
requiring lots and lots of thought...
In regard to the Book of Thomas, the phrase 'shall have
everlasting life' is now put into another context. If one
understands another, their actions, their path~ then
they are closer to 'living' in that person's shoes~ or
sandals (whatever). To Live is also to be CONSCIOUS,
and to be conscious, is to be Conscientious. So there~!
I 'M A REBEL~ SHE'S A REBEL~ WOULDNCHA
LIKE TO BE A REBEL TOO !?
In the spirit of attaining understanding, did I have
the audacity to PAINT the following mural~ back
during a period when self-sacrifice and persecution
were big personal issues, fighting for a foothold into
the world of mutual respect~ a place called Adulthood~!
I just hope that, if those weird Heaven & Hell places
actually exist, that the Universally approved Jesus approves
of all the attempts I made to sympathize with His plight~!
